While we do not currently use paper made from post-consumer recycled materials in our yearbooks, all paper used by our print partners is FSC-certified by the Forest Stewardship Council—a globally recognized organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.
What Does FSC Certification Mean?
FSC-certified paper is sourced from forests that are managed to meet the highest environmental and social standards. This certification ensures that the wood pulp used in the paper comes from responsibly harvested trees, with considerations for biodiversity, workers’ rights, and long-term sustainability. It also means that the paper can be traced through a transparent supply chain—from forest to finished product.
How Is FSC-Certified Paper Different From Recycled Paper?
FSC-certified paper typically uses virgin tree fibers rather than recycled content. While this might sound less eco-friendly at first glance, it’s important to understand that “recycled” is not always synonymous with “sustainable.” In fact, the term “recycled paper” is not always tightly regulated, and the actual environmental impact can vary greatly depending on how and where the paper is recovered, processed, and manufactured.
For example, recycled paper that’s processed using non-renewable energy sources—like coal—may have a larger carbon footprint than responsibly sourced virgin paper processed using greener technologies. In some cases, the energy, water, and chemical usage required to de-ink and reprocess recycled fibers can outweigh the environmental benefits, especially when not managed properly.
Why FSC-Certified Paper?
The papers selected by our printers strike a thoughtful balance between environmental responsibility and product quality. FSC-certified stock allows us to maintain the vibrant, professional print standards needed for a high-quality yearbook, while supporting the long-term health of our forests and minimizing ecological harm.
We are always evaluating our materials and production processes with sustainability in mind. While we do not currently use recycled paper, we believe FSC-certified paper provides a reliable and environmentally conscious alternative—and often a more sustainable one overall.
